Cecilia Paredes
A true artist thinks outside of the box – does the unexpected – and Cecilia Paredes does exactly that with her unique paintings. Like other artists, she finds inspiration from everything that surrounds her including herself and then takes a step beyond the expected and submerges herself in her art
Cecilia Paredes was born in Lima, Peru. She lives and works between the cities San Jose, Costa Rica and Philadelphia going where her work takes her. She started her career off as a painter but then moved on to other forms of creative art such as photography and 3D art.
Cecilia Paredes is an artist who is unafraid to see her body as a form of art medium. She pushes the boundaries of nature to achieve the desired effect on her art. She tends to incorporate natural themes in her work by usually painting flower patterns, plants and animals to blend herself into the background. The effect that this produces is almost one of invisibility as the artist almost disappears into her art except for a faint outline that is sometimes visible and various body parts such as hands or hair that she leaves visible for artistic purposes. She literally gets lost in her own world – a world that she creates.
This eventually led to the self-portraits she is known for today where she camouflages herself within her art to create a self-portrait where her own body is painted to blend in with the backdrop. Her art uses her body, the body of a woman, to depict many themes which she considers important. It is portrayed as being in a sacred zone with the surroundings possibly symbolizing the chaos of the outer world.
“The illusion of ‘disappearing’ into the landscape that surrounds me is very exciting.” – she said in one of the interviews
